Ordering from Germany: Bestellung aus Deutschland

A customer experience by Joachim Seidel (Deutsche Version)

Update for 2023 – we now offer fully landed prices to all of the EU – delivery and all import duty and taxes are included in the price you pay, there are no extra charges.

I’m a satisfied German customer of Herring Shoes since 2010 and after ordering my first pair of shoes I have never looked back 🙂

Herring Barcelona II

To start with, I wanted to try brands I knew, like Church’s, Loake and Cheaney. But over the last few years, I realised more and more how beautiful their own Herring branded shoes are a combination of craftsmanship, price and, of course, looks made me want to try them.

When Brexit happened, I was curious and unsure if the costs would explode. I really was wary ordering from any British brand like Barbour, Gloverall and so on…the details as to shipping, tax and customs were not as clear as I wanted it to be and in the first few months, I read a lot about confusion at the borders when importing goods from the UK.

But after contacting the team at Herring, they gave me the confidence to continue as normal and the process really isn’t much different. I soon realised that the way Herring Shoes processed my order was simple and self explanatory when I had my items in the basket and checkout.

I always choose DHL Express for my deliveries and I am very satisfied. The first two times it was a little bit unusual to answer the German customs via email where they were asking if my order was private or business, but after I responded, I received my parcel very quickly. Even two returns didn’t take any effort. Herring Shoes included all the forms and labels I needed to make the DHL collection.

Of course, when ordering in the EU from the UK I think about the costs, but I can tell you first hand they are about the same like before, because Herring reduces the UK-VAT of 20% before adding the necessary German tax or fees in the basket (their site is intuitive so if it detects you are viewing from outside of the UK it will show you the EX VAT price)

Finally, I’m still very glad to have the opportunity to order great British shoes at a great price 🙂
